Dear participants of the workshop,
here is a small preview of the things I would like to use the robotic arm for, I put it in a blogpost since it is the easiest to read and include video's. At the bottom is a long list of questions (some in Dutch apparently), only a few of them will be discussed in this workshop.

I hope it will give you some insight into my plans, see you tomorrow.

My graduation project is about preforming Additive Manufacturing (AM) using a robotic arm in order to process two materials.
The robotic arm is a tool in this machine in order to increase the number of Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) in comparison with existing techniques. Smart implementation of these extra DOF's is one of my research questions.

Furthermore I would like to find out if a link can be made between a design drawing and the final 'behaviour' of the arm. This in relation to the way, and thereby resulting properties, of material addition. Meaning properties such as velocity, path generation, printing plane and dpi.

I would like to go a step further then formats such as STL and VMRL in order to include more information about how the product should be made. So that machine setup times are eliminated and AM becomes stand-alone, allowing for the production of one-off products in a standardized way. This raises some debate about standardization, but it is a debate I'd like to have.
This would allow parametric design to be implemented on a industrial scale. And have all these different sizes (next video) made at the competitive pricing of mass production.

Questions for the workshop.

Concerning programming

Relevant research questions
-Would it be better if the printing head or the model moves during printing?
-What path would the print head take for depositing material on the model?

Reverse Kinematics model
-How could you model a preferred orientation in case of singularity?
-How can I make a predictive model of the speeds the joints will have when going through motions? In other words predict when the arm can not preform a motion.
-How would you make a deviation model giving the arm freedom to choose its own more optimal path in situations where the given is impossible to preform.

Deposition
In the video's the arm follows the uv lines of the surface for a easy path creation.
-What would be the options in linking this with the CAD file, or intermediary solver?
-Is it possible to alter / move the direction of these uv surface controls?
-In what way is Bezier modeling optimal for translating to print paths?
-Could you go into solid modeling and in what way would it be different from surface modeling?
-In what way could you link solid modeling to the deposition behavior?

Model error

So I ordered TM 3-5-40-20 a myself to check it out. But today I received an email from Shapeways that there in an error in the model. The minimum thickness of 0.7mm has been surpassed. I thought I had this covered but the cell wall was modeled separately from the Grasshopper model and morphed into place. I should have foreseen this.

Above is the image Shapeways sent, really nice of them to do this by the way. The value should have been 0.7.

I removed all the shop models and have to fix the digital model. Stupid setback.
The good news is however that no other people have ordered a TM, although this was the plan :.(.

Shop up and running

Dear all,

Finally the shop is up and running, so now everyone can order a prototype and join in finding a application for the structure. The intro clip is on the TM(TurrisMotus) blog and hopefully circle the web. I'm trying to post it to some design blogs and am planning to do the nastiest form of guerrilla marketing, in the commenting section of TED. Hope they don't arrest me for it.

ciao,

Project development

So the project is changing, let me explain how.

Currently I'm looking for a company willing to have me as a graduate student, since I still have to graduate from IDE. Combining this with a open design project is the second thing I'm working on. For enabling others to join the project I have set up a Shapeways shop. Through the shop you can buy several configurations of TurrisMotus and play with them yourself. I hope to get a broad range of inspiration and speed up the fuzzy front end of the project. This because I really have no specific application that best fits this structure. Once I have this application in which it could outperform current products the next phases of the product development process can begin. Specifics in this still need to be determined but is depending on both application and company.

Tomorrow I plan to have the shop up and running. If you order before December 4th you can have your TurrisMotus printed and send to you before Christmas.

Next to that I need to send out a press release of some kind, since now I don't really have any followers, but anyway it's all for fun so far. Testing if a real OpenDesignAgency could work and what the business model should / could be like.

The project is undergoing some change

Dear internet, world and curious persons.

The TurrisMotus project is currently undergoing some changes that in the near future will allow you to participate in the creative process, the most fun part, in developing a product using its principles.
For now though it is hard to be open since change is going really fast right now and I don't want to disappoint anyone with false pretenses.

But I want to still keep the principals of the OpenOpenDesignAgency and am therefor open in what is going on behind the screen (of your interface with the web). I am working on really getting you involved in the co-creation of a product using the unique structure that is TurrisMotus. The projects name will change slightly as well into the plural of the word TurrisMotus, although I need to some help from people that still speak the dead language of Latin to do so.

I am also looking to grow the team, which for now is only myself.

Ciao,
